"Wonder" Book Review @RJPalacio

‘’Let us all meet each other with a smile.’’- Mother Teresa  This quote is a good theme for the book Wonder because the smallest gesture can make the greatest impact on someone's life. August (Auggie) Pullman was a child just like everyone else who wanted to fit in. As a young boy, he was diagnosed with Treacher Collins syndrome, which causes facial deformities. His parents decided to protect him from the horror of people and the comments they can make by home schooling him. When he reached grade five, he and his family decided to give public schooling a try. Auggie was then enrolled in Beecher Prep school in the fall. Wonder takes you through the journey of ten year old August Pullman and the problems he faces during his first public school year. Auggie learns that kindness from one person can make all the difference in the world. I hope that Wonder, by R.J. Palacio inspires you to be loving towards all and be an over all kinder person. Go check out Wonder by R.J Palacio, and also 365 Days of Wonder, both of which are bound to make you smile. Wonder, the movie, first premieres on November 17th, 2017.  #choosekind

  5. How much of an impact can books with these types of themes have on the pre-teen/early teen crowd? Do you think that kids can be positively impacted by them? Do you think that the kids who are most likely to choose to read this kind of book are already going to #ChooseKind? Do you discuss the themes of these types of books with your friends?

    1. These types of books can have a major impact on preteens and teens. I feel as they open teens eyes to the point where they see that there is more in the world than just their own personal problems. I do believe that teens can be positively impacted by ''Wonder''. I read this book in third grade with my mother, and again in sixth grade with my reading class. Even the troublemakers and kids who slept during most classes, thoroughly enjoyed this book! Everyday I do my best to #choosekind throughout every action I make. I can see everyone picking up this book and being impacted by it, but I feel as though it is going to impact those who do not #choosekind more than those who do, because they are more bound to see that they can change and should change how they go about their actions in this world. I find myself relating simple things in my daily life back to the themes or lessons that ''Wonder'' has taught me and enjoy sharing them with my friends! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my review and ask me these questions!

    2. Unfortunately I haven't taught reading in years, my students don't seem to want to talk books with me anymore. (I teach social studies now.) I really miss having these conversations in class.

I am glad you wrote that the even slightly motivated like this book. I have several that I can recommend it to now :)

I see you are using the #choosekind hashtag. Is this something you are seeing in your school? I see it is mainly used with the book/movie. How are the students in your school leveraging this meme?

    3. Unfortunately, I am not seeing this hashtag much at my school. My teachers try their best to get the message across to others about being kind, but in middle school, being kind is not most teenagers top priority. Throughout the years, I can see kids losing their passion to be kind to others, they feel as if they don't have time or have better things to do. Holding the door opened or giving someone a compliment is like foreign language to most teens. I feel as if this hashtag needs to be spread through schools because people need more kindness in their lives. #choosekind has been my motto to follow for a long time and I hope that it sticks with others just as it has stuck with me. I feel as if the world needs more books/movies that motivate others to be kind! Thanks for asking me these questions!
